History of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota
Vadnais Heights is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota. The city is named after Antoine Vadnais, an early settler and farmer. Vadnais Heights was incorporated in 1960 and became a city in 1974. The city is located northeast of Saint Paul and is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Early history:
The area's first known inhabitants were the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. French explorers arrived in the 17th century and established trading posts. In 1837, the United States government signed treaties with the Dakota and Ojibwe, ceding the land that would become Minnesota. In 1839, a group of settlers from Ohio arrived in the area and established a community called Dayton's Bluff. Dayton's Bluff was later renamed Saint Anthony Falls after a local waterfall.
The Civil War:
During the American Civil War, Minnesota was a Union state. The Union Army built Fort Snelling near Saint Anthony Falls to protect the city from Confederate attacks. In 1862, Minnesota's first governor, Henry Sibley, led a military expedition from Fort Snelling to drive the Confederates out of Minnesota.
Modern history:
In the early 20th century, the Twin Cities area experienced rapid growth. This growth continued into the 1950s and 1960s. In 1960, Vadnais Heights was incorporated as a village.
