History of Allouez, Wisconsin
The 1600s was a time of significant change for the state of Wisconsin. A Sioux-speaking tribe called the Winnebago inhabited the Green Bay area, and wild rice fields grew abundantly along with the Fox and East Rivers. Corn, beans, squash, and tobacco were also plentiful. In 1634, Jean Nicolet became the first European explorer to discover the state of Wisconsin. He landed on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Green Bay area, where he claimed the area for the King of France and named it "La Baye Verte," meaning Green Bay. Nicolet's discovery paved the way for further exploration of the state and its natural resources.
In 1671, European settlers established a permanent presence in the Green Bay area. The first documented settler was Pere Claude Allouez, a French Catholic missionary who founded a mission along the Fox River. The area around the mission became known as Bellevue, and it grew to encompass the land east of the river between the City of Green Bay and the Village of De Pere.
Allouez is a historic community with a rich past. Originally part of the Town of Bellevue, Allouez separated in 1874 and constructed its first public schoolhouse soon after. The new town quickly developed a thriving economy, with brewing and shipbuilding becoming significant industries by the decade's end. A brickyard was also established, spurring further agricultural and residential settlements.
The 1920s saw the beginning of residential subdivisions in the town of Allouez. To promote further development, the Allouez town board established a water department in 1924 to provide public water service. The department began operation with a single well and a few miles of water main. By the decade's end, the system had expanded to include several wells and over 100 miles of water main.
The mid-20th century saw steady growth in suburban residential development. In 1970, the town of Allouez reached a population of 13,573. With limited land for development, the town needed a master plan to control future growth. The plan, completed by the end of the year, called for controlling the location of commercial development, promoting select multi-family residential development, and recommending the development of more educational and recreational facilities. Today, Allouez is a thriving community with various businesses, schools, and parks. Thanks to the forward-thinking of its leaders, Allouez is a great place to live, work, and play.
