History of Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin
The Sioux Indians owned this land before the United States military bought it in 1851. The west side of Green Bay, Wisconsin, came from their territory except for what would later become Ashwaubenon which belonged to two daughters who sold off small plots as farmers began buying up properties until they had enough space for growing crops without having any worries about property lines or boundaries defining where one ended, and another started. The Village of Ashwaubenon was first settled in 1854 and officially incorporated in February 1900.
This city's name, "placed where they watch," comes from the Ojibwe language. The word ashiwabiwining refers to a lookout who constantly looks out for danger in either direction. Another theory suggests Chief Ashwaubamay had something to do with its founding. He never talked about his past life during recorded conversations.
A third possibility is that the founders named it after the Ashwaubenon Rapids, which were a few miles upstream from the village and served as a portage for canoes traveling between the Fox River and Green Bay.
