History of Cudahy, Wisconsin

Cudahy lies in Milwaukee County. The suburban city was named for its founder and meatpacker Patrick JuleMarie Cudahy, who founded his home along what would become known as “The Avenue Of The Ozarks." It borders St Francis to the north; General Mitchell International Airport provides a natural barrier between it and Lake Michigan. The city was officially created on January 25th, 1888.

Cudahy’s first few years were plagued with several issues, such as attempts from larger cities like Milwaukee to annex the area and financial instability brought about by the Panic of 1893. Opening a local airport in 1919 led to an influx of new residents and businesses and helped spur further growth.

The Great Depression hit Cudahy hard, as it did for many communities across the country. However, things began to improve following the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal policies. One of the most notable changes to come out of this period was the construction of the Cudahy Towers, a public housing project that provided homes for low-income families.
