History of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin

The history of Native Americans in Wisconsin is very complicated and intricate. Today's remnants show how deeply they impacted this state's early days, not just with their culture but also through pioneer settlement on land granted to them by treaty centuries ago (even though many were later removed). One such site can be found along with STH 32 near modern-day Sussex Mills, where some earliest traces were discovered; these ancient campsites represent high-level archeological finds which haven't been seen since 1871 when construction crews uncovered layers upon layers. Upon turn, pines forests beneath banner rocks - building a railroad bed. The Pleasant Prairie area is believed to have been first inhabited by the Miami and Potawatomi Native American tribes. 

The first settlers in Pleasant Prairie were of English and German descent. The English settlers came to the area in the early 1800s, followed by the Germans in the 1840s. The Village of Pleasant Prairie was incorporated in 1928.

Demographics of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin

As of the census of 2010, there were 19,719 people, 7,025 households, and 5,164 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,611.8 inhabitants per square mile (1,006.9/km2). There were 7,351 housing units at an average density of 957.0 per square mile (368.4/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 89.3% White, 1.5% African American, 0.3% Native American or Alaskan Native, 4.9% Asian (up from 1 percent in 1990), below 0.05% Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian (not including any other race or combination thereof), 2 Hispanics or Latinos of any race (1.4 percent in 1990).

There were 7,025 households, of which 39.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 22.5% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4% had someone who was 65 years or older living alone. The average household size was 2.81, and the average family size was 3.19.

The median age in the village was 35 years old. 27.3% of residents were under 18; 6.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 32.7% were from 25 to 44; 25% were from 45 to 64, and 8.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 49.4% male and 50.6% female.

As of 2000, the median income for a household in the village was $69,444, and the median income for a family was $75,509. Males had a median income of $50,865 versus $32,232 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,149. 2 percent of families and 2 percent of the population were below the poverty line, including 1 percent of those under age 18 and 3 percent of those age 65 or over.
