History of Port Washington, Wisconsin

Port Washington is a charming town located in Ozaukee County, about 25 miles north of Milwaukee on the banks of Lake Michigan. The county seat, Port Washington, was first settled in 1835 by Wooster Harrison, who laid out a town at the mouth of Sauk Creek.

The city was founded in 1846 and was originally named Wisconsin City. The name was later changed to Washington City and then Port Washington due to the city's successful harbor. The harbor was an important economic asset for the city, as it allowed for transporting goods by sail and steamer. 

Port Washington became an important center for manufacturing and commerce. Tragedy struck in 1899 when a fire destroyed much of the city.
