History of Superior City, Wisconsin

The city of Superior was founded on September 6, 1854, by a group of prospectors from the nearby town of Copper Harbor. The area was known as "Copper Harbor Landing" and consisted of little more than a few log cabins and a trading post. However, the city quickly grew as prospectors and settlers began to arrive in search of wealth and opportunity. By 1860, Superior had become a thriving community with over 1,000 people.

The city's growth continued throughout the 1860s and 1870s, thanks partly to its location on the Great Lakes shipping route. In 1876, the first railroad arrived in Superior, further enhancing the city's commercial prospects. By the turn of the century, Superior had become one of the most important ports on the Great Lakes.

In addition to its busy port, Superior developed a thriving manufacturing sector in the early 20th century. Companies like US Steel and Duluth-Superior Company became significant employers in the city. The prosperity of Superior's manufacturing sector was short-lived, as the Great Depression led to widespread unemployment and economic hardship.

The Second World War relieved Superior's economy, as the city's manufacturing plants were converted to produce war materials. After the war, Superior's economy slowly began to rebound, although it never fully recovered from the effects of the Depression. Today, Superior is a diverse city with a thriving economy. The city's port remains an integral part of its economy, and manufacturing plays a significant role. Superior is also home to a growing service sector and many tourist attractions.
