History of Waukesha

Waukesha is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The name "Waukesha" comes from the Potawatomi word for "fox," Waukesha was named after the Potawatomi chief Wau-e-shah. The city was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1846. Waukesha was originally part of the town of Brookfield, but it became its town in 1847. In 1896, the city annexed the village of North Waukesha, and in 1900, it annexed the town of Waukesha. Waukesha continued to grow rapidly throughout the 20th century, reaching 50,000 by 1970.
