History of West Bend, Wisconsin

The complete history of West Bend, Wisconsin, has yet to be written, but we know that the area was first settled by Native Americans drawn to the region by the abundance of game and fish. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now West Bend were French fur trappers who arrived in the late 17th century.

In 1836, George Birdsell planted the Village of Trenton, located south of present-day West Bend. However, Birdsell's settlement didn't last long; a band of Native Americans destroyed it in 1837.

The next attempt at European settlement in the area came in 1840 when a group of German immigrants founded the town of Kewaskum. Two years later, in 1842, a group of Irish immigrants established the village of Barton.

The Village of Barton and the Town of Kewaskum eventually merged to form the City of West Bend in 1902. Since then, West Bend has continued to grow and prosper, becoming the thriving community it is today.
