History of New Ulm, Minnesota

New Ulm is a city in Brown County, Minnesota, founded in 1854 by the German Land Company of Chicago. The city was named after the city of Neu-Ulm in the state of Bavaria in southern Germany. Ulm and Neu-Ulm are twin cities, with Ulm situated on the Baden-Württemberg side of the Danube River and Neu-Ulm on the Bavarian side. In part due to the American city's German heritage, it became a center for brewing in the Upper Midwest. It is home to the August Schell Brewing Company. The Sioux called it Wakzupata, which roughly means "the village on the cottonwood."

In 1856, the Settlement Association of the Socialist Turner Society helped secure New Ulm's future. The Turners originated in Germany in the first half of the nineteenth century, whose motto was "Sound Mind, Sound Body." Their clubs combined gymnastics with lectures and debates about the day's issues. Following the failed Revolutions of 1848, numerous Germans emigrated to the United States. Turners formed associations (Vereins) throughout the eastern, midwestern, and western states in their new land. The most prominent secular German-American organization in the country in the nineteenth century. The Turners in New Ulm was instrumental in developing the town's infrastructure and defenses. They built a sawmill, gristmill, and woolen mill. They also constructed a stockade and dug a moat around it for protection against attacks from Native Americans. Turner's efforts helped to make New Ulm one of the most prosperous towns in Minnesota.

New Ulm is a city rich in German history. In 1856, a group of German immigrants settled in the area to create a community that reflected Turner's ideals. The Turners were a national organization that advocated the rights of German Americans, and they supplied the settlers with capital. The new colony grew rapidly, with over 600 residents.

The settlers faced many challenges, including severe weather, crop failures, and attacks from Native Americans. However, they persevered and built a thriving community. New Ulm became known for its excellent schools, beautiful architecture, and delicious German food.

Today, New Ulm is a thriving city with a strong German heritage. Visitors can enjoy the city's many parks and scenic views or explore its rich history at the Brown County Historical Society Museum. If you're looking for some German culture, check out one of the city's many festivals or visit one of its many microbreweries. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it in New Ulm!
