History of Shawano, Wisconsin

Shawano is a city with a rich history that dates back to the early days of European settlement in North America. In 1672, Jesuit missionaries founded a mission known as St. Mark's at the Shawano Creek and Wolf River junction. However, it was not until 1844 that the first permanent white settler arrived. The year before, in 1843, Samuel Farnsworth had explored the upper regions of the Wolf River and been impressed by the vast stands of trees he saw. Farnsworth returned to his home in Neenah and convinced Charles Wescott to set up a sawmill in Shawano.

The town's early growth rested exclusively on the lumber industry. Waterways provided a quick form of transport for logs. In 1866, a military road connected Shawano to Fort Howard (Green Bay), allowing more accessible transport of goods and services. The intersection of these two transportation routes helped spur the growth of Shawano into the thriving community it is today. The fertile land in the area also supported agriculture, and the proximity to water made Shawano an ideal location for businesses involved in fishing and canning.

The area was inhabited mainly by English and Yankee settlers until the Civil War. Germans began coming in increasing numbers in the mid-1860s. Other Europeans and Scandinavians arrived over the following decades. They began to farmland left by loggers. The English settled mainly in the eastern part of the county, while the Yankees moved into the western part. The Germans settled in small towns and farms throughout the county. They were followed by other groups, such as the Scandinavians, who also settled in small towns and farms. By 1900, the county's population had reached its current level of about 200,000 people.

Today, Shawano offers a variety of amenities and activities that appeal to all types of people, from families to retirees. Shawano is also a very affordable place to live, with the cost below the national average. Additionally, the city has a low crime rate and is located in a beautiful country. Shawano should be at the top of your list if you are looking for a place to call home!
