History of Tomah, Wisconsin
Tomah is a city located in Monroe County. It was founded by Robert E. Gillett in 1855 and incorporated as a city in 1883, although the charter wasn't issued until 1894. The city was named after Thomas Carron, a trader at Green Bay who had integrated into the Menominee tribe. The Menominees pronounced the name Tomah or Tomau, and he became known as Chief Tomah. The city was believed to be named after Chief Tomah because he once held a tribal gathering in the area. The city is located on Interstate 94 and US Highway 12, approximately halfway between Chicago and Minneapolis. The population of the city was 9,797 at the 2010 census. Tomah is home to several attractions.
The city is home to two landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places: the old Tomah Post Office and the Tomah Public Library. The old Tomah Post Office is a beautiful example of Classical Revival architecture, and the Tomah Public Library is an essential example of Beaux- Arts architecture. Both buildings are significant for their architectural merits and their role in the city's history. The old Tomah Post Office was built in 1883, and the Tomah Public Library was built in 1902.
